Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures

Written by: / / 1 Comment

There is something going down in PacWorld and the only one who can put a stop to it is the little yellow dude we know as Pac-Man. The Pac is back for some new adventures in PacWorld with the help of his friends, so let’s get chomping and see what it’s all about.

What You Need to Know

The menacing ghosts lead by Betrayus have escaped the netherworld to invade PacWorld. Betayus has stolen the Frigidiginator – a device invented by Sir C. to stop Betrayus – to cause another heat wave in the city so you and your friends, Spiral and Cylindria, need to do whatever it takes to stop Betrayus and reclaim the Frigidiginator.

What’s New?

The game is different to the Pac-Man games we have enjoyed over the years and is a 3D platformer played from a third-person perspective, with some open-world elements as well. The game takes inspiration from the CG animated TV series of the same name, where Pac-Man teams up with Inky, Pinky, Blinky and Clyde in order to protect the city and save their friends.

The game also introduces different power-ups during gameplay, including Fire-Pac, Ice-Pac and Metal-Pac. Each power-up gives Pac-Man a special ability which are sometimes required to progress through the level or defeat certain enemies.

What’s the Same?

Despite the fact that it’s a 3D platformer, there are still lots of Pac-Man elements that we know and love. You still get to eat Pac-Dots (also called pellets) in the game with the addition of power pellets. What is really cool is that they kept familiar sounds in the game, like the classic chomp and Pac-Man death sounds. The game features a semi open-world, but you can follow the dots to know where you are going.

What I Liked

- 5.) Pac-Man in 3D takes the franchise in a whole new direction and makes it fresh.

- 4.) The controls are really simplified to make for some casual gaming – an easy pick up and play game.

- 3.) I enjoyed the colourful and well-designed levels and even though some levels might use same setting they are all different so it doesn’t feel too repetitive.

- 2.) The power-ups are a welcome addition to the game and add some variety.

- 1.) Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures isn’t a small game. There are so many different locations with a set number of levels and bonus levels to find, so the replay value is really high.

Favourite Realisation

The game is really easy for even a child to enjoy, but will also teach them how to play games. The game starts off easy, but increases the difficulty in very small increments to make it more challenging as you go along.

What I Didn’t Like

- 3.) The voices used in the TV show are different to those in the game. I would expect a game based on the TV show to have the same voice cast.

- 2.) Pac-Man repeats the same dialogue over and over, so when you pick up the Ice-Pac power pellet, for instance, he never says anything other than “Somebody ordered an Ice-pac.” It was funny at the beginning, but after hearing it forty times it got a bit old.

- 1.) One thing that really needed improvement in Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures is the camera. It can be freely controlled, but in certain places it just moves to a very bad angle and makes it difficult to jump between platforms.

Least Favourite Moment

The poor camera angles made me lose many lives in a certain boss battle. The camera moved to such an angle that I couldn’t see the platform and then sadly wondered off over the edge.

What’s Extra?

Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures adds a lot of replay value with the game’s bonus levels. There are also some mini games you can find as you progress through the game, using silver tokens to unlock them, which can be found hidden around the levels and sometimes for completing a level for the second time. You can also upgrade Pac-Man’s health by collecting certain items.

The game also has a four-player offline multiplayer mode where each player takes control of a ghost and you need to find Pac-man before your friends do. It takes place in a blue maze but in a third-person perspective.

The Bottom Line

Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures is squarely aimed at fans of Pac-Man and children, and I’m glad to say that I found it to be a hidden gem. If you like this style of gameplay and you’re looking for something to entertain you kids, then this is perfect for you.
