Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut

Imagine being augmented with biotechnology to improve what you can do… this is exactly what Deus Ex: Human Revolution is all about, but I would prefer if we kept it in the game for now. In the meantime, let’s take a cyberpunk journey for some augmented action, hacking and sneaking.

What You Need to Know

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a cyberpunk-inspired game and takes place in the year 2027, many years before the original Dues Ex. You play as Adam Jensen, a private security officer with Sarif Industries, a leading biotech company that specializes in human augmentations. After a attack on the headquarters that that leaves you almost dead, you undergo physical augmentation.

What’s New?

Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut includes the ‘Missing Link’ downloadable content that has been incorporated into the main game, instead of just being a standalone expansion, while the boss fights have been improved. The game also features some re-worked textures and new lighting, as well as Smartglass support on the Xbox 360 (or GamePad on the Wii U) which acts as a second screen for the game for things like hacking, inventory and mini map.

What’s the Same?

From my understanding the game has the exact same story as Dues Ex: Human Revolution, but with some small tweaks to the gameplay and boss battles. So for those that played the original release it may feel like you’re just replaying the original game.

What I Liked

- 4.) I enjoyed being able to interact with different objects in the world that give you a little backstory of your character at certain points.

- 3.) I really liked the use of the additional screen via SmartGlass, which made hacking feel like a whole different game.

- 2.) The non-playable characters really pulled me in with some really human-like artificial intelligence – at some points the AI is done very well.

- 1.) The overall depth of the game, the customizations, the locations and the story which were very engaging.

Favourite Moment

It might be a cheesy moment, but it was when I entered a room and spotted four enemies. As they turned to start shooting at me, I took out the first two on my level and then in one smooth motion took out the other two via a grenade I threw just before I started shooting.

What I Didn’t Like

- 4.) The forty minutes at the start of the game where you almost have no control, except looking around. I understand what the developers were trying to do, but it was bit long.

- 3.) The game is mostly about stealth, but the issue is you can get shot at before you even do anything to alert the enemies. I see it as almost a super sensitive detection glitch.

- 2.) I never have an issue with the default controls in a game, but the default control scheme here just didn’t sit well with me, feeling out of place.

- 1.) I like a good boss battle, but these fights felt a little off. For example, with the first boss battle you go into a two level room, and there is little cover to use but multiple ways to defeat him – you just have to know which option is best.

Least Favourite Thing

When I started the game and it took over my character, trying to make it an interactive cut-scene. I would have liked to control the character and not be forced to look at pointless things.



What’s Extra?

With it being a director’s cut, you have the option to enable director’s commentary while you play the game. I recommend first time players not do this – when I gave it a listen, it sounded like there were a lot of spoilers.

The Bottom Line

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut is a really solid game that engaged me with the story and the gameplay – it’s different to any other first-person shooter I’ve played, but will be familiar to fans of the previous Deus Ex games.
