It’s been a long time coming but in just a few more months (and in February 2013, to be specific), you’re finally going to get the brand new SimCity experience that you’ve been dreaming of for so long.

For me, SimCity set the bar for simulations back in the day and got me interested in pouring hour after hour into building up a bustling, virtual city. Printing out maps as the city grew to plan its expansions, agonizing how to balance growth with population happiness and pulling my hair out when disasters struck – it was engrossing to say the least.

Whilst watching a demonstration of the new SimCity, presented by Maxis vice president Brett Barry and his team at E3 2012, all of those memories came flooding back and now I desperately want back in on the city building simulation experience after seeing how far the developer has raised the bar it set so long ago.

Just what am I excited about you ask? It’s the whole package of course, rather than any one aspect by itself, but let me share some thoughts from my experience and you can make up your own mind.

Artistically, SimCity is drop-dead gorgeous and one could spend hours just admiring the colours and details from the people, to buildings and terrain. It’s obvious a great deal of care has been invested in getting the art style and detail up to triple-A standard – I’m looking forward to using the zoom feature to get a close look and just soak it all in.
