The end of an era

Almost eight years ago now, a couple of friends who were passionate about videogames had an idea to start a website that would provide news and reviews of the latest games to South African gamers. It was a big dream, one that we worked hard on to bring to fruition, and so El33tonline was born. Over the years our dream has grown into something bigger than we could ever have imagined, and in so doing it has become so much more than just a website, it’s become a part of us, and we’d like to think it’s become something special to you too.

In those years we’ve achieved some incredible things, things that we never would have dared to imagine could be possible with our dream. And now eight years later it’s with a heavy heart that we have to share the news that El33tonline is once again changing. We will no longer be bringing you daily news, but we hope you will continue to enjoy sharing our passion for videogames. The videogame industry has changed so much over the years, even here in South Africa, and due to those changes as well as changes in our personal lives we have made the difficult decision to conclude this chapter of El33tonline.

El33t has grown so much since those early days, it was just a month after we launched in September 2006 that we attended rAge for the first time. It was a mind-blowing experience and one that cemented our passion and belief in our new venture. Little did we know back then that one day we would have the incredible opportunity of attending gamescom in Cologne, E3 in Los Angeles, Captivate in Rome, the PlayStation Experience in London, and even visiting Sony Online Entertainment in Texas. We’ve appeared on The Verge TV show, we’ve featured on Good Hope FM radio, appeared in panel discussions, been published in various magazines and online outlets, run online gaming events, and had our own stand at rAge. We’ve travelled thousands of miles (and walked even more) to meet developers, conduct interviews, and attend presentations, and all to bring you our honest opinions on the latest games. It’s been exhilarating, it’s been exhausting, there have been highs and there have been lows, but our passion for videogames and for E33tonline has always remained the focus despite the many challenges that we have faced over the years.

We’d like to thank you our very loyal El33t readers for your support over the years. We’ve all made awesome friends, and we’ve had the great fortune of meeting many of you in real life at 2UpGamers, JHB Gamers, DBNGamers and rAge. The fact that so many of you have embraced our passion for El33t just as strongly as we have is testament to how gamers are the most awesome people in the world. The support of the distributors in South Africa as well as international publishers and developers has also been key to our success, so a big thank you to each of you too. Last but not least we could never have achieved everything that we have without the excellent team that drives El33tonline every day, it’s you who provides the great content, you are masters at your art gentlemen and you are, in my books, the best of the best.

It’s not goodbye though, it’s just see you later, or even better see you online.

Happy gaming p33ps.
