THQ will rise again thanks to Nordic GamesWritten by: / / 3 Comments
It’s been over a year since the collapse of THQ, and after the company’s many properties and assets were split up and sold to various other publishers and interested parties, one of the oldest videogame publishers around was formally shuttered.
One of the many interested parties, Nordic Games, managed to snap up the rights to intellectual properties including Darksiders, Red Faction, MX VS ATV and more. What else did Nordic Games pick up from the THQ auctions?
The rights to the name ‘THQ’ itself.
Speaking to Polygon recently, Nordic Games general manager Klemens Kreuzer has said that the company managed to negotiate the rights to use the THQ brand, but what exactly does Nordic plan on doing with the name? According to Kreuzer, the THQ name may adorn this year’s MX VS ATV, and even future games in the Darksiders franchise.
Why would Nordic Games use the THQ brand, as opposed to building itself up as a major game publisher? The concern is over brand recognition, says Kreuzer, who admits that many industry watchers questioned who Nordic Games was following the THQ auctions.
There are further challenges still to overcome, Kreuzer says:
“We are small team. The expectations from outside regarding the IPs of THQ are really high. We see it everyday on our Facebook sites. If we post something new to a project the first comments are, ‘Oh, nice. But what about Darksiders 3?’
“This is where we need some more patience from the fans, because we want to be able to do it right. The owner of Nordic Games has given [interviews] where he has said that he doesn’t want to make a [bad] sequel.”
True enough, following a simple comment from Darksiders’ previous creative director, Nordic Games had to clarify that the franchise would see a new game, but it will be some time before we see it. In the meantime, the company is doing what it can to remind fans that these franchises are important to them, having recently released compilation packs for both Darksiders and Red Faction.
When can you expect to see news from Nordic Games regarding its future plans? According to the interview with Polygon, we can look to gamescom 2014 in August for more details.
We’ll be hoping see at least a glimpse of a new Darksiders game during gamescom week – will you?
