E3 2014: Enter the beautiful underwater world of Abzu in tantalizing debut trailer

A lot of amazing independently developed games were showcased during this year’s E3 2014 press conference day, but one of the games that immediately caught my attention during Sony’s event was Abzu (or ABZÛ) from Giant Squid, helmed by Journey art director Matt Nava.

Seemingly played from a 2D perspective, but presented with luscious 3D visuals, not a whole lot is officially known about Abzu, but going by the trailer below we can suss out that it’s a deep sea exploration game filled with awe-inspiring sights to see, wondrous scenes to investigate and treacherous dangers to navigate through.

Not only is Matt Nava serving as creative director on the game, but Journey composer Austin Wintory will also contribute a score to Abzu, which already sounds like a very special collaboration.

In addition, on Giant Squid’s site the team’s mission statement is to “create artistic games that deliver beautiful, meaningful and timeless experiences to a wide range of people,” while striving to create “innovative and deeply moving games that will inspire players, challenge convention, and push the boundaries of experiential and narrative interactive entertainment into new and unexpected areas.”

Lofty goals indeed, but coming from one of the core contributors to Journey gives these words some weight.

Abzu is only due out in 2016 on PlayStation 4 and PC, so enjoy the debut trailer below because it might be the last we see of the game for a while to come:
