Nintendo has announced that the latest entry to the incredibly popular Mario Kart racing series is already off to a terrific start, while the series overall has passed a very significant sales milestone.
Having only been released on May 30th (and May 29th in certain territories), Mario Kart 8 managed to sell 1.2 million units in its opening weekend, signalling to Nintendo that the series is still alive and well, even on the ailing Wii U. Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata wrote in a statement:
“Such positive early feedback for Mario Kart 8 reinforces the great gameplay experiences that Wii U currently offers. With Nintendo set to showcase its future releases at E3 next week, this is a great milestone going into the summer season.”
Before the release of Mario Kart 8, the Mario Kart series as a whole has sold 100 million units, Nintendo says, and with seven titles in the franchise means an average of fourteen million units per title – here’s the breakdown of sales:
- Super Mario Kart: 8.76 million
- Mario Kart 64: 9.87 million
- Mario Kart Advance: 5.91 million
- Mario Kart: Double Dash: 6.88 million
- Mario Kart DS: 23.56 million
- Mario Kart Wii: 35.53 million
- Mario Kart 7: 9.62 million
