If you needed any indication of the success of Ubisoft’s latest open-world action game, then the company has provided a clue by announcing that Watch Dogs sales on day one of launch have gone on to break records set by the publisher’s previous games.

Announcing the news on the official Ubisoft blog, communications manager Gary Steinman wrote:

“In its first 24 hours of availability, Watch Dogs sold more copies than any previous title in Ubisoft’s history!”

Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot chimed in, writing:

“Watch Dogs is an amazing achievement and our teams should be proud that the creativity, innovation and long hours they invested in making this game are paying off.

“It’s great to see so many customers enjoy playing the game, and it shows that Watch Dogs has cracked the code for developing a new blockbuster [intellectual property] and a thoroughly new-gen experience.”

Why is this achievement so momentous? Bear in mind that Ubisoft publishes some of the most popular games on the planet, including Assassin’s Creed, and for a new game in an all-new franchise to be able to outpace the day one sales of any of the publisher’s well established franchises means the game was very, very highly anticipated. With some help from the marketing team, of course.
