The latest Media Create hardware chart sees total console sales rise by 7% week over week despite sales being 31% lower compared to the same period last year.

The Wii U climbed two spots to third position as consumers prepare themselves for Mario Kart 8′s launch on May 29th. The PS Vita also recorded slightly better numbers compared to last week to retain second place on the chart.

Sony will be disappointed that PS4 sales only increased by 11% week over week despite the release of its high profile exclusive inFamous: Second Son on May 22nd. The platform holder desperately needs to secure some good Japanese games for the system in the coming year or two otherwise the PS4 looks set to perform very poorly in its home territory compared to how it’s doing in the rest of the world.

Here’s this week’s hardware chart in full (previous sales data appears in brackets):

• 3DS XL – 18 374 (18 350)
• PS Vita – 14 070 (12 810)
• Wii U – 9 024 (6 716)
• PS3 – 7 565 (7 339)
• PS4 – 7 543 (6 792)
