thatgamecompany secures additional $7 million in funding, current project has entered “next phase of development”Written by: / / No Comments
Journey developer thatgamecompany has announced that it’s managed to secure an additional $7 million in funding for the title its currently working on. Writing on the studio’s website, the developer said its current project has entered the “next phase of development” after this impressive sum was secured via a partnership with Capital Today and a team of other investors “who share [the studio's] vision in making meaningful interactive experiences that inspire, connect, and emotionally touch the hearts of players around the world”.
“With this new investment, our studio is able to scale up development efforts to focus on making the best game possible in the same spirit as flOw, Flower, and Journey. We’ll also begin laying the infrastructure to self-publish, market, and distribute on our own terms for this next project and beyond.”
In August last year thatgamecompany co-founder Jenova Chen said the studio’s current project is “the bastard child” of all its previous games despite continuing their themes of connection, nostalgia, and self-reflection. Chen also revealed that their new game is a “risky” venture which seemingly eschews typical videogame genres and gameplay mechanics.
