Rare suffers layoffs as Microsoft decides to ‘change development process and methodology’Written by: / / 2 Comments
Long-standing British game developer Rare has suffered a round of layoffs, Microsoft has announced, as the studio changes “development process” and “methodology” for future projects.
While an exact number of Rare employees hasn’t been revealed, a report on Eurogamer estimates that roughly sixteen people will be affected by the layoffs. In a statement, a Microsoft spokesperson wrote:
“At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences. As part of Rare’s commitment to this goal, we have made a decision to change our development process and methodology at Rare to best support our future projects, this has led to us reviewing the skills and the makeup of our development teams in our business.
“Rare continues to invest in our people and future projects.”
A Failure to Kinect
The news arrives in the wake of the release of Rare’s latest game, Kinect Sports Rivals, and following the announcement of a Kinect-less Xbox One bundle that will no doubt cast a shadow over the development of Kinect-based games in the future.
Do you think the new Xbox One bundle without Kinect has led Microsoft to ‘change development processes and methodology’ at Rare?
What games would you like to see from Rare in the future (other than new Kinect games)?
