Is Ed Boon teasing the next Mortal Kombat?

Mortal Kombat series co-creator and current franchise steward Ed Boon is stirring fans into a flurry on Twitter with a few of his recent tweets, hinting (in the most roundabout way possible) that there may be an announcement related to the next Mortal Kombat early next month.

Boon’s latest Twitter tease went a little something like this:

What does the ‘X’ stand for, indeed.

Could Boon be referring to Mortal Kombat 10, following on from 2011’s outstanding Mortal Kombat reboot (also known as Mortal Kombat 9)? Or is Boon hinting at a ‘cross’ collaboration, similar to Street Fighter X Tekken in 2012? A collaboration isn’t out of the question, either, considering Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe in 2008.

A new Mortal Kombat game has been released at an average of about every three years, so another game in the series is certainly due after developer NetherRealm Studios released the excellent Injustice: Gods Among Us last year.

Previous tweets by Boon have alluded to a June 2nd announcement of some kind after he lead Twitter followers on a mathematical journey counting down the days to early June.

What do you think Ed Boon and the crew at NetherRealm are working on at the moment?
