A new page has popped up on today advertising the Xbox One for only $399 – $100 below the console’s regular price – and without Kinect packaged in the box.

The page says that the new $399 bundle will be available starting June 9th, 2014 (Click the image to enlarge):

Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi wrote in a post on Xbox Wire regarding the new Kinect-less Xbox One bundle:

“We’ve heard that you want more choices from Xbox One. You want a wide variety of options in your games and entertainment experiences and you also want options in your hardware selection.”

“First, beginning on June 9th, in all markets where Xbox One is sold, we will offer Xbox One starting at $399. This is a new console option that does not include Kinect.”

A New Generation of Xbox LIVE

In the same post, Mehdi announced that entertainment applications will be available to all Xbox LIVE users on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, whether you’re an Xbox LIVE Gold subscriber or not, essentially removing the paywall to access apps like Netflix and Twitch.

Mehdi also went on to announce that Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers will be getting more value out of their consoles starting in June, with a total of three Games With Gold offerings namely Dark Souls, Charlie Murder and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.

Significant price cuts are also expected soon for Xbox One games during special price promotions in the future, while Games With Gold will also launch on the new console with Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Halo: Spartan Assault, and you’ll only need a single Xbox LIVE Gold account to gain access to both versions of the programme.

The Significance of Xbox One Without Kinect

Why is an Xbox One without Kinect significant? At the $399 level, it puts Xbox One in direct competition with Sony’s PlayStation 4, which also retails for $399 without the PlayStation 4 camera. With prices for both consoles now directly comparable, the fight has become a lot more even.

How will Sony respond to the price drop and new bundle? The next few weeks will be rather exciting leading up to E3 2014 next month.
