Media Create is a little late with its weekly sales report due to the recent Golden Week holidays in Japan so we’re relying on Famitsu and its parent company Enterbrain for our data instead. Overall console sales are up by 19% week over week but down by 22% compared to the same period last year.

The 3DS and 3DS XL duo outsold the PS Vita and PS Vita TV dyad by 17 041 units, while Wii U sales rose by an impressive 44% during the Golden Week period – perhaps fuelled by consumers’ desire to get the console prior to Mario Kart 8′s May 29th release in Japan.

Here’s this week’s hardware chart in full (previous sales data appears in brackets):

• 3DS/3DS XL – 42 647 (33 987)
• PS Vita/PS Vita TV – 25 606 (23 942)
• PS4 – 11 692 (12 712)
• PS3 – 9 917 (6 726)
• Wii U – 8 217 (5 710)
• PSP – 1 906 (1 957)
• Xbox 360 – 146 (242)
