Skylanders Trap Team announced with new portal that ‘brings life to toys’Written by: / / 4 Comments
Activision has announced a fourth new toy-based Skylanders action game for release in 2014 that aims to ‘bring life to toys’ thanks to the creation of an all-new ‘Portal of Power,’ the ‘Traptanium Portal.’
Due for release in October across all consoles, Skylanders: Trap Team will once again make use of physical ‘smart toy’ figurines that are placed on a Portal of Power peripheral during play, allowing you to swap your characters in and out of the game simply by placing a new figurine on the Portal. The toy records and stores a player’s character progress giving you the chance to improve the power and abilities of your collection to use in the game.
What’s new in Skylanders: Trap Team?
The most obvious difference is the inclusion of a new Portal of Power called the Traptanium Portal, a new peripheral included in a Trap Team starter pack – here’s a look at the new portal:
How is that different to the previous Portals of Power in other Skylanders games? In the image you’ll notice a plastic green object that is slotted into portal, below which you can see a little gate, or dungeon. The green key, or Trap, is just one of many plastic peripherals that you’ll use throughout the game in order to play as the villains in the game (in addition to the heroes).
Once you’ve fought and defeated an enemy or boss, you’ll need to place a new Trap key into the Portal of Power to capture them, essentially assigning that villain to the Trap. When you’ve successfully captured an enemy, you’ll be able to hear them talking from the Traptanium Portal – a feature of the new Portal of Power.
Here’s the debut trailer for Skylanders: Trap Team to give you an idea of the new world and story of the game (no, the game isn’t projected out onto the wall in real life, sadly):

So what’s the story conceit this time? Long-time Skylanders villain, Kaos, has apparently destroy the legendary Cloudcracker Prison allowing the most feared and notorious villains to escape and invade the world of Skylands. It’ll be up to players to find them and capture them using Traps and the Traptanium Portal. For the first time ever, you’ll also be able to play as Kaos if you capture him.
During the game you’ll be able to swap between playing as a hero or newly reformed villain if you’ve captured them, and if you’ve got some friends who also have the game you’ll be able to once again use your levelled up toys across all games and platforms, with drop-in/drop-out co-operative play supported, too.
A new addition to the Skylanders universe are the ‘Trap Master’ characters which include brand new Skylanders as well as reposed characters from previous games, with fifty new Skylanders said to be added overall. You’ll also be able to use any of your previous Skylanders toys in Trap Team, though, so if you’ve amassed a collection you can breathe a sigh of relief.
Forty villain characters are said to be included in Trap Team, but you won’t need to have forty different Traps to capture them all, at least at once. Each element in the game is represented by one of the Traps so it’ll simply be a matter of matching an element up to the correct villain to capture them.
