This week’s Media Create hardware chart sees overall console sales fall by 43% week over week and by 21% compared to the same period last year. Some people are pinning this alarming decrease on Japan’s national consumption tax jumping from 5% to 8% on April 1st but another factor to consider is that there was only one new release featured on the latest top ten software chart.

The PS Vita overtook the 3DS XL to claim first position while the PS4 retained third spot despite shedding almost 10 000 units in sales week over week. Meanwhile, the Wii U only managed to sell 7 962 units during the latest accounting period despite getting a short-lived boost last week.

Here’s this week’s hardware chart in full (previous sales data appears in brackets):

• PS Vita – 25 017 (39 752)
• 3DS XL – 22 947 (52 124)
• PS4 – 13 401 (23 327)
• PS3 – 10 871 (17 154)
