It may have only been a rumour earlier this week, but Borderlands The Pre-Sequel has been formally announced by 2K Games, with a release date set for later in 2014 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel takes place on the moon that you might have seen looming above the planet of Pandora in the previous games, and is set between the events of the original Borderlands and Borderlands 2. The game features four new playable classes and sees a group of characters working with Borderlands 2 antagonist, Handsome Jack (before he was evil).

The most notable departure from the previous Borderlands games is that setting – the Moon – which means that you’ll need to deal with the challenges of anti-gravity movement, affording you the chance to make incredible jumps across caverns, while enemies and items will appropriately go floating off into space.

You’ll also be dependent on an oxygen meter to stay alive, but that selfsame oxygen can be used to perform quick hover manoeuvres as you scramble over the surface of this gigantic satellite. Oxygen won’t always be a concern, however, thanks to the placement of handy atmosphere generators to give you a break from worrying about suffocating.

Other than these two important changes, gameplay in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel seems to be very familiar to what fans of the series will remember, which means lots of first-person shooting with tons of numbers popping off of enemies and chaos ensuing, with chances to level up, improve your equipment and swap out your weapons for increasingly potent armaments.

Each of the new characters will of course also bring their own unique abilities to the fray, with new weapon and ammunition types (with properties to freeze enemies and smash them to bits, for example) making an appearance, too. The chance to play as Claptrap (under the moniker of ‘Fragtrap’) is also included.
