Earlier this year rumours began to circulate that online giant Amazon was working on a dedicated gaming console for release in 2014. Now Amazon has effectively dispelled this rumour by announcing the Fire TV media player which can indeed function as a microconsole although its primary purpose is to act as an all-in-one entertainment hub for your TV.

The Amazon Fire TV costs just $99 and is now available in North America. Although certain games can be played using the device’s bundled remote, users who want to take full advantage of the gaming aspect of the Fire TV can purchase the Fire Game Controller separately for $39.99 (which is a very competitive price as far as wireless Bluetooth gamepads go).

The Fire TV runs Amazon’s version of Android and has a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Over 100 games are already available for the device with thousands more “coming soon”. Amazon claims that the average price of paid games on the Fire TV platform is just $1.85. Some of the notable titles already available for the device include the first season of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead episodic series and Asphalt 8. Telltale says that The Wolf Among Us and its upcoming Game of Thrones series are also headed to the Fire TV in the future.

The first videogame exclusive for the Fire TV is an action title called Sev Zero. The game costs $6.99 or is free with the purchase of the Amazon Fire Game Controller, and supports second-screen interaction via the Kindle Fire.

Here’s the launch trailer for Sev Zero along with a video showcasing some of the titles in development at Amazon Game Studios whose team was recently bolstered by the arrival of Portal designer Kim Swift and Far Cry 2 designer Clint Hocking:
