Dissapointingly, the skeletons of Hellraid are animated better than a Harryhausen film

Even if you didn’t know it, chances are that you’ve seen one of the many films created under the guidance of Ray Harryhausen, or at the very least other works inspired by his creations – Mighty Joe Young, Clash of the Titans, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and in particular, Jason and the Argonauts, must surely have seeped into your range of cultural references by now.

The signature of Harryhausen’s films was the appearance of mythical beasts, horrific monsters and other creatures that were superimposed into live-action scenes using models, brought to life using stop-motion animation techniques which resulted in a charming visual aesthetic unique to the method – the skeleton warriors in Jason and the Argonauts epitomise the result.

Why am I going on about antiquated animation techniques in films? Mainly because I really want to see the effect applied to games, but disappointingly (for me) Techland’s Hellraid won’t grant me my wish.

That doesn’t mean the look and movement of the skeleton warriors you’ll fight in Techland’s four-player co-operative dungeon crawler are any less impressive – quite the opposite. In the video below, you can see how Hellraid’s monstrosities are brought to virtual life thanks to motion capture:
