The latest Media Create hardware chart once again demonstrates that the Japanese console business is currently in decline. Total console sales are down by 27% compared to the same period last year despite the recent introduction of the PS4 and a new model of PS Vita last October.

The PS Vita outsold the 3DS XL this week to take second place on the chart, and was one of the few consoles that enjoyed a sales boost along with the Xbox 360 and PS Vita TV. The recent release of Soul Sacrifice Delta certainly helped the PS Vita’s cause, and Sony will be hoping that more developers get behind the handheld in the coming months so that it can pose a more serious challenge to the almighty 3DS which has already sold over 15.2 million units in Japan.

Here’s this week’s hardware chart in full (previous sales data appears in brackets):

• PS4 – 35 294 (65 685)
• PS Vita – 31 325 (21 581)
• 3DS XL – 24 192 (26 027)
• PS3 – 12 102 (13 155)
• 3DS – 10 876 (11 986)
• Wii U – 7 773 (8 204)
• PSP – 3 425 (3 652)
• PS Vita TV – 1 962 (1 543)
• Xbox 360 – 300 (257)
