The Dark Souls style multiplayer invasion of Watch Dogs can be toggled off

You may have heard by now that Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs won’t be a strictly solo affair when the game launches at the end of May this year – up to eight players will be able to roam around a single online connected world, each of whom will be able to hack one another in an expanded game of ‘hide and seek,’ and while details are still a little thin on the ground, it’s become clear that players will be able to drop in on one another without other players even realising it.

The development team knows that some players might not want others to sneakily appear in their game worlds, and during a Twitch livestream event Watch Dogs lead designer Danny Belanger confirmed that you’ll have a choice over how you interact with players online, saying:

“All the online activities are just part of the menu. They’re a choice. But if someone is not into that, they can totally turn it off.”

“There’s also something important called the shield. If someone comes into your game, they can’t come in right after so you can’t be spammed in that way — unless you become aggressive and you start going into other people’s games. Then you really become available. But it’s just a player choice in the end.”

You can see an example of this multiplayer hacking in practice in a previously released gameplay video below:

The option to toggle multiplayer options and customise your experience is an extension of the development team’s desire to create a game where players have ultimate choice – a philosophy we learned about during our own interview with Danny Belanger late last year where he previously said that multiplayer will be customisable based on your own tastes.

Watch Dogs is out on May 27th around the world on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 – are you back on board after an extended period of silence following the game’s delay last year?
