The Last of Us features one of the best and most gripping plots in videogame history so it seems only natural that Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed action adventure would make the transition to the silver screen at some point. Now Deadline Hollywood reports that a live-action film adaptation of the game is in development with Screen Gems signed on as distributor.

The Last of Us movie will feature a script penned by the game’s Creative Director Neil Druckmann while he along with Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells, Christophe Balestra and Game Director Bruce Straley will be the “creative architects” of the project.

The Evil Dead director Sam Raimi’s production company Ghost House Pictures will also be involved, with Naughty Dog co-president Wells calling the combination of Screen Gems and Ghost House a “perfect fit”:

“Since our game released last June, we’ve talked with many companies about making a film, but we couldn’t have found better partners who share our creative vision and high standards.”

Meanwhile, Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper has this to say about The Last of Us’ film adaptation:

“Screen Gems’ Brian Dukes and Eric Ling brought this game to my attention insisting we go after it, and when I saw the quality of the storytelling, I knew the audience for this project was far greater than just the gaming community and that Neil Druckmann must write the screenplay. I am thrilled that SCEA’s Riley Russell was able to get me in front of Neil and Evan Wells to plead my case. Sam and his team at Ghost House round out the perfect team to help realise Neil’s vision.”

It will be very interesting to see which actors and actresses are cast for the film’s lead roles, and how close it sticks to the game’s dramatic storyline. Are there any particular stars you’d like to see cast as Joel or Ellie?
