After 19 years with Sony, Jack Tretton steps down as SCEA president and CEOWritten by: / / 4 Comments
After nineteen years with the company, and after joining Sony Computer Entertainment America in 1995, Jack Tretton will be stepping down from his roles as president and CEO of SCEA as a result of “a mutual agreement between Mr. Tretton and SCEA not to renew their contractual relationship.”
Tretton has of course been with SCEA since the beginning, having played “a pivotal role” in the launch of the original PlayStation, as well as the PlayStation 2, PSP, PlayStation 3, PS Vita and the PlayStation 4.
“During his tenure,” a statement from SCEA reads, “Tretton was also responsible for achieving several industry milestones, including surpassing 50 million units sold of PlayStation 2 in North America, and aggressively growing the PlayStation business in Canada and Latin America.” Tretton write in a statement:
“Working at SCEA for the past 19 years has been the most rewarding experience of my career. Although I will deeply miss the talented team at SCEA and the passion demonstrated every day by our fans, I’m very excited about starting the next chapter of my career.
“I want to thank the employees, partners and customers for their tireless commitment to the PlayStation brand and, of course, to our fans who have pushed us to new heights of innovation and entertainment over the past two decades. I leave PlayStation in a position of considerable strength and the future will only get brighter for PlayStation Nation.”
Big Shoes to Fill
As Tretton steps down from his roles at SCEA, current executive vice president and COO of Sony Network Entertainment International (and a fifteen year veteran of PlayStation), Shawn Layden, will step into the role of president and CEO of SCEA starting April 1st, 2014. Layden wrote:
“It’s an honor and privilege to join Sony Computer Entertainment America and be a part of the team that is leading the next generation of gaming and entertainment. SCEA is committed to delivering breakthrough gaming experiences that inspire fans and exceed their wildest expectations.
“As PS4 shows us every day, there has never been a better time to be part of the PlayStation community and I look forward to working with our retail, development, publishing and network partners to further demonstrate why PlayStation is the best place to play.”
While we’ll definitely miss Tretton’s press conference addresses in the future, we wish him all the best with his future endeavours.
