Uncharted creative director Amy Hennig departs Naughty Dog on bad terms, sources say

Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that Amy Hennig has departed the studio – her last day with the company was March 3rd.

The studio’s highly experienced writer and creative director on the Uncharted series, and a game industry luminary, was last known to be working on the announced PlayStation 4 Uncharted game and recently marked her tenth year at Naughty Dog, but before joining the studio Hennig had contributed to games including Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City during her time with EA, before working on games in the Legacy of Kain series at Crystal Dynamics.

Sony confirmed the news of Hennig’s departure in a statement:

“We can confirm that Amy Hennig has left Naughty Dog. Amy has made significant contributions to the game industry and we appreciate all she has done for Naughty Dog. The development timeline of Uncharted will not be impacted.”

Curious in its Absence

Curiously, Naughty Dog itself hasn’t acknowledged the departure of Amy Hennig, either on the studio’s website or on Twitter. Speaking to IGN, sources say that Hennig was ‘forced out’ of Naughty Dog by The Last of Us directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, under whom the Uncharted series may come under control. The nature of the announcement is also uncharacteristic of the videogame industry, where the departure of a senior developer (who has contributed so much) would usually be met with more fanfare.

Personally, I truly hope that this isn’t the case and that such a veteran, valuable and talented personality such as Hennig was able to depart on her own terms with respect from her peers.
