It may not feel like it, but it’s taken a fair amount of time to finally find ourselves within a week’s reach of a brand new Thief game, this time from the capable hands of Eidos Montreal and Square Enix.

The rumours of the game’s existence stretch back to April 2008 when it was still thought to be called ‘Thief 4,’ with further rumour and speculation continuing to run rife before it was confirmed that the fourth game in the series was indeed in development. But that was in 2009.

It took another four years for 2014’s Thief to be formally announced and unveiled, with previews and extended coverage waxing and waning since the beginning of 2013 with talk of troubled development cycles and peculiar design decisions, all of which have since been cleared away before the most recent round of overall positive previews hit The Internet.

It’s been a roller-coaster ride for Thief and Eidos Montreal, but signs are pointing towards a solid return to the shadows for Master Thief Garrett.

We’ll find out for certain next week when the game is out around the world, but for now you can indulge in a pacey launch trailer powered by slick tricks, explosive set-pieces and the supernatural:
