This week’s Media Create hardware chart sees the 3DS XL increase its lead over the PS Vita thanks to the release of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 (and the Limited Edition 3DS XL seen above) which sold close to half a million copies on debut. Total console sales are down by 51% compared to the same period last year, largely due to the 3DS reaching saturation point. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Nintendo released the 2DS in Japan or a new model of 3DS. Would sales skyrocket or would consumers stick with the 3DS model they already own?

Despite Wii U sales remaining very low on this week’s chart, the console is just 15 000 units away from passing the Xbox 360′s lifetime total in Japan.

Here’s this week’s hardware chart in full (previous sales data appears in brackets):

• 3DS XL – 36 306 (26 042)
• PS Vita – 16 951 (20 457)
• 3DS – 12 002 (11 420)
• PS3 – 10 240 (14 100)
• Wii U – 7 180 (8 072)
• PSP – 2 948 (3 366)
• PS Vita TV – 1 331 (1 789)
• Xbox 360 – 194 (260)
