Slightly Mad Studios and publisher My.com have today announced World of Speed, a free-to-play arcade racing game.
Due for release in 2014, World of Speed is touted as a triple-A massively multiplayer online arcade style racer for PC, where players will be able to “hop in the driver’s seat of an endless garage of cars,” with motors ranging from “everyday city runners to the fastest super cars on the planet,” with chances to drive iconic cars from history.
True-to-life race tracks are also promised, modelled on roads and raceways from cities including London and San Francisco. Chief executive officer of Slightly Mad Studios, Ian Bell, said of the game:
“At the heart of World of Speed lies a unique massive multiplayer online experience which incorporates a dynamic social elements and entirely new ways to compete in a racing video game – from an individual to a team level. World of Speed is an online game and will be continuously supported with innovative and fresh content to keep the competition furious well after its launch.”

Slightly Mad promises that World of Speed will introduce “a new level of connected competition” where players will be able to engage in real-time social gameplay through the ‘Club’ and team gameplay, as well as the ‘Airfield’ social hub, with missions and objectives provided in every race.

According to reports, World of Speed is a spin-off of the upcoming Project Cars, also from Slightly Mad Studios, which has so far impressed with amazingly detailed screenshots of intricately detailed vehicles and stellar lighting. Slightly Mad Studios is of course also known as the developer of the Need For Speed: SHIFT series.
