Sonic Boom announced for Wii U and 3DS, TV series also in the worksWritten by: / / 3 Comments
There has been a deluge of Sonic games released over the past few years for consoles and mobile platforms, and the blue speedster shows no signs of slowing down following Sega’s recent unveiling of a new branch of the Sonic universe entitled Sonic Boom.
This transmedia project from Sega of America spans a new Sonic game for Wii U and 3DS, a 52-episode CG television series, as well as a toy line from TOMY. The Sonic Boom TV series will debut on Cartoon Network in the US and on CANAL J and GULLI in France during the 2014/2015 season, while the game doesn’t have a release window as yet.
The Sonic Boom videogame serves as a prequel to the stories revealed in the TV series and will have collaborative gameplay at its core. Big Red Button Entertainment is handling the Wii U version while Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time developer Sanzaru Games has been assigned the 3DS port. According to Sega’s press release, the game will feature traditional elements of Sonic titles such as speed while introducing exploration, combat and a new Enerbeam tether mechanic that will “allow the Sonic Boom world to be discovered in totally unique ways”.
“We want to ensure that the Sonic brand continues to evolve and appeal to new generations of Sonic fans and this different look introduces a fresh approach that will be at once both familiar and new to consumers,” said John Cheng, President & COO at Sega of America. “We are committed to supporting this initiative to provide great entertainment to fans for all aspects of their lives.”
