After a lengthy search for a new CEO to take over from Steve Ballmer, Microsoft has appointed Satya Nadella (46) as the companies new chief executive.

The India-born computer engineer most recently held the position of executive vice president of the Cloud and Enterprise group at Microsoft, but has been with the company for over twenty years working in the business division and research and development, with his most recent work contributing to Microsoft’s push towards cloud computing and integrating this technology into other services including Skype and Xbox LIVE.

Satya Nadella – His first interview as CEO of Microsoft
Microsoft’s founder, long-time chairman and previous CEO, Bill Gates, has been called up to take on the role of ‘technology adviser,’ but will step down as chairman. Gates said of Nadella’s appointment in a video address (below):
“I’m thrilled that Satya has asked me to step up, substantially increasing my time at the company. I’ll have over a third of my time available to meet with product groups and it’ll be fun to define this next round of products working together.”
