H33rsay: Amazon to launch dedicated gaming console in 2014Written by: / / 3 Comments
H33rsay is El33tonline’s round-up of game industry rumours and speculation where we have looks at unconfirmed and unannounced pieces of news emerging from anonymous tipsters, information leaks and generally dubious sources. It may not all be true, but it’s still fun to talk about!
As Sony and Microsoft enter a new battle for next-gen console dominance and Nintendo’s future in the home market remains unclear, the oft-rumoured gaming device from online retailer Amazon is said to be launching in 2014.
This according to a report on consumer site VG247, and pointing to multiple sources, says that “senior publishing” agents have been meeting with Amazon to be briefed on the supposed hardware, which is “said to be roughly the same size as the PSone redesign, grey in colour, oblong in shape and with sharp edges.”
As a pre-production unit, however, it’s “likely to have a full makeover before any official release.”
The Amazon console is apparently designed to be a central entertainment hub and will use a TV for video (as opposed to a tablet-like device) and may aim to provide casual gaming experiences (think Angry Birds and tablet/mobile games), but with enough power to deliver higher quality games, too.
The console is said to run on the Android operating system and will launch at under the price of $300.
VG247 is currently reporting the story without a rumour or report disclaimer, but we’re treating it as such for the moment. You can read the full story over here.
