This week’s Media Create hardware chart reveals that the Japanese console industry is currently going through a tough time, with total sales down by 29% compared to the same period last year.

The only console which managed to improve on last year’s performance during Week 3 is the PS Vita which posted solid sales of 24 755 units compared to only 9 036 units during the same period in 2013.

It’s hard to tell if the current trend of low console sales is due to consumers saving their money for the PS4 or if certain consoles such as the 3DS are beginning to reach saturation point. Many publishers are also moving to mobile development so fewer console games being released will logically result in fewer consoles being sold.

Here’s this week’s hardware chart in full (previous sales data appears in brackets):

• 3DS XL – 32 393 (40 038)
• PS Vita – 24 755 (29 494)
• 3DS – 15 045 (20 116)
• PS3 – 13 243 (14 845)
• Wii U – 11 443 (14 020)
• PSP – 4 024 (4 758)
• PS Vita TV – 2 208 (2 522)
• Xbox 360 – 273 (281)
