December 2013 NPD: Xbox One and Xbox 360 outsell the competition as Call of Duty claims No. 1

Sales tracking firm The NPD Group has released its latest revenue report for the US videogame industry, this time for the month of December 2013, with overall revenue growing by 2% year-over-year to $3.28 billion across hardware, software and accessories, mostly attributable to the continued strong sales of newly launched consoles like Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo 2DS.

December 2013 Software Sales

Software sales in the US videogame industry during the month of December 2013 were down compared to December 2012 to the tune of 17%, dropping to $1.28 billion. With no real new game releases to speak of other than Gran Turismo 6 on PlayStation 3, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 and Just Dance 2014 occupied the top three spots on the sales chart in December – here’s the full listing:

December 2013 Hardware Sales

Hardware sales in the US were up an impressive 28% in December 2013, generating revenues of $1.37 billion, mostly thanks to continued sales of Xbox One, PS4 and the 2DS. While The Xbox 360 and Xbox One were the best-selling home consoles across both the previous and new generation, the 3DS was the overall highest selling console in the US for the month.
