The latest Media Create hardware chart reveals that total console sales are down by 25% compared to the same period last year. The only system that managed to improve on last year’s Week 2 tally is the PS Vita which enjoyed a 266% sales spike. The handheld’s newfound momentum will hopefully encourage more Japanese developers to get behind the PS Vita which in turn could lead to some great games heading our way in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the Wii U continues to struggle and is fairing even worse than it was during the same period last year when it sold 20 715 units during Week 2. Despite its reasonably low price point there are simply not enough compelling titles available for the console at this stage to convince the average consumer to purchase one.

Here’s this week’s hardware chart in full (previous sales data appears in brackets):

• 3DS XL – 40 038 (114 156)
• PS Vita – 29 494 (70 087)
• 3DS – 20 116 (62 399)
• PS3 – 14 845 (40 085)
• Wii U – 14 020 (51 271)
• PSP – 4 758 (13 283)
• PS Vita TV – 2 522 (5 313)
• Xbox 360 – 281 (447)
