EA announces SimCity Offline singleplayer mode as a free downloadable add-onWritten by: / / 2 Comments
They said it couldn’t be done, but EA and developer Maxis have revealed that an offline version of 2013’s city building and management game, SimCity, will become available with an upcoming patch, ‘Update 10.’
Writing on the official SimCity blog, general manager of Maxis Emeryville studio, Patrick Buechner, began his post:
“Let’s get right to it.
“SIMCITY OFFLINE IS COMING!
“I’ve wanted to say those words for quite some time, so my apologies that I didn’t take the time to say Happy New Year first.”
According to Buechner, when the update is released you’ll have access to all of your previous downloadable content “anytime, anywhere, without the need for an internet connection.” The team is apparently in the late stages of development on the update, but their priority is in making sure that it’s “as polished as possible,” which means it’ll be undergoing extensive testing before release.
“In Update 10,” Buechner writes, “you can still play solo in Regions on your own, or in Multiplayer with people from around the world. What’s new is the Single Player Mode, which allows you to play the game Offline by yourself. And because your saved games in this mode are stored locally, you can save and load to your heart’s content. Our team will be delivering a follow-up blog that will outline the full details in the near future so stay tuned.”
The online version of SimCity, meanwhile, will remain with multiplayer, the Global Market and Leaderboards all available, while pre-existing saved cities and regions will still be accessible online.
Mod support was also touched on, with Buechner writing that modders will now be able to “make modifications to the game and its components without compromising the integrity of the Online game,” with modding tutorials to be released in the future.
Will you be dipping back into SimCity now that you can play it offline?
