The two models of 3DS may have dominated the latest Japanese hardware chart but the big winners were the PS Vita and PS Vita TV which leapfrogged the Wii U into second place, with the handheld being the only system to sell more units than it did during the same period last year. In fact, PS Vita sales were up by an impressive 284% which just goes to show the platform’s increasing momentum since the release of the PS Vita 2000 in October.

All three Sony platforms enjoyed higher sales week over week, while the reverse was true for Nintendo’s systems. We have an interesting few weeks ahead of us in terms of how these consoles fare once the holiday buying spree has subsided.

Here’s the latest hardware chart in full (previous sales data appears in brackets):

• 3DS/3DS XL – 187 920 (208 893)
• PS Vita/PS Vita TV – 88 169 (75 207)
• Wii U – 60 548 (79 174)
• PS3 – 40 941 (27 020)
• PSP – 12 069 (9 451)
• Wii – 1 727 (2 719)
• Xbox 360 – 1 124 (770)
