The PlayStation 4 has sold over 4.2 million units since the console’s launch in November 2013, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced.
The news arrived arrived out of the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which was confirmed by SCE president Andrew House in a statement which read:
“The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn’t be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network. After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014.”
The 4.2 million units milestone was achieved on December 28th, and follows on from sales success after launch where the PS4 managed to move 2.1 million units in just over two weeks on sale, with one million of those sold within the first 24 hours of the console become available in North America.
Over 9.7 million units of PlayStation 4 software have also been sold since launch worldwide, both at retail and digitally through the PlayStation Store, while Sony claims that PlayStation Plus subscriptions are up 90 percent since November 2013.
Microsoft, on the other hand, announced earlier this week that the Xbox One has sold three million units worldwide by the end of 2013.
