Debut Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor screenshots include beheadings and at least one ghost

Originally announced out of the blue in mid-November by developer Monolith and Warner Bros. Interactive, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor has received its first set of screenshots and a single piece of concept art to more fully showcase the fantasy action RPG.

Due out in 2014 across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, the highlighted feature of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a new approach to enemy artificial intelligence with the ‘Nemesis System’ which will, according to Warner Bros. Interactive, “shape enemy relationships and characteristics, creating personal and unique stories and gameplay arcs that remain persistent even after death.”

The game is set between the events of ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and follows the journey of Talion, a ranger who, thanks to a mysterious spirit, has been brought back from the dead to avenge his family, but why else has he been chosen to return from the grave after being killed in a vicious attack on the night of Sauron’s return to Mordor?
