The MLB: The Show franchise is one of the few platform-exclusive sports series out there, and over the past few years SCE San Diego Studio has pushed the power of the PS3 to create some seriously impressive visuals.
The developer recently revealed that MLB 14: The Show is currently in development for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita, and will be released in spring 2014. More details will be unveiled in the coming months but for now SCE San Diego Studio has announced that from MLB 14: The Show onwards players will be able to carry over their saved progress to each new iteration in the franchise. Another new feature is the Quick Counts option which utilises generated pitch counts allowing players to complete a full 9-inning game in less than 30 minutes.
Of course the developer is also working hard to ensure that the PS4 version raises the bar for graphical fidelity in sports games. Stadiums are now modelled using over 1 million polygons – up from about 150 000 on PS3. Meanwhile, crowds use over 1000 unique models – up from 42 on PS3, and each player model has up to 40 000 individual hairs on PS4.
You can see an early preview of different game elements running on PS4 in the teaser trailer below:
Here are some screens showcasing how much work has gone into ensuring that every element of the game’s stadiums looks spot on:
