Monday Musings: Should I just buy a Wii U instead of a PS4?Written by: / / 32 Comments
Welcome to this week’s Monday Musings, a weekly meander through the random thoughts of members of El33tonline. It doesn’t always makes a lot of sense, but it does make us feel a little better sending whatever’s at the top of our minds out into the Internet ether.
This week, Oliver asks an important question about a next-gen console purchase…
So, it’s like this…
I’ve got a pre-order in for a PlayStation 4. I’ve convinced myself that it’s worth the asking price of +/- R6400, and whether I buy the machine now or six months from now doesn’t really matter because the price won’t change all that much. Maybe a few price-concious bundles may skip along to entice me (or make me sad if I’ve already bought one by then) but that’s about the most I’m expecting as far as a price drop is concerned.
As a PS Plus member, I would automatically get Resogun and Contrast to play, and I would probably pick up Knack and Killzone: Shadow Fall at launch.
As someone who writes about and reviews games, it’s also important for me to have at least one of the latest consoles in my possession so I can continue to do that effectively – I can’t talk about whether I think a next generation console is worth it or not unless I myself have gone through the painful process of forking over large bundles of cash to secure one (I buy new, full priced games on a regular basis so I know what that feels like, trust me).
On the other hand, I could pick up a 32GB Wii U with Zombi U (which is by all accounts an excellent game) for R4500, and then get Super Mario 3D World later this year along with Pikmin 3 and Wind Waker HD, all for less than the price of the PS4 on its own. I’ll then also be ready for Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta 2 in 2014, as well as Watch Dogs (which rumour mongers say is looking sharp on Nintendo’s console).
All of the games listed above have been hovering around my ‘most anticipated’ and then ‘most wanted’ lists for some time now, so I wouldn’t be disappointed with the Wii U even if those were the only games I ever got (and that’s not counting the next Zelda and whatever multiplayer hijinx are available with Nintendo Land and other games I’ve clearly forgotten about).
Context is Everything
Bear in mind that these decisions are predicated on the fact that the Xbox One won’t be available in South Africa any time soon, so my current console options are limited.
Should I just call the whole thing off and go for a 3DS, with Pokemon X and Y, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Fire Emblem and Zelda: Link Between Worlds to look forward to? Should I take the cash I would have spent on a PS4 and get a really nice video card for my upcoming PC upgrade?
Does the Wii U provide a better entertainment option this year than either of the next-gen consoles combined, or is that a ridiculous thought?
