Well, to be fair, there was a reason they made fun of videogame release dates at E3 this year…
While many a South Park and game fan would have celebrated the news that the upcoming adventure RPG, South Park: The Stick of Truth, had received a December 2013 release date, it is now with an immense expression of disbelief that the game has been delayed into 2014.
The Stick of Truth is now due for launch on March 4th, 2014, which is a Tuesday (and a traditional North American release day) so it’s not yet clear if Europe will receive a different launch day.
In a surprisingly informal post on Ubisoft’s blog, Ubisoft North America’s president Laurent Detoc noted that it’s been quite a journey to releasing The Stick of Truth and getting it into a state that the publisher could be proud of, writing:
“Within three weeks after acquiring the game, we sadly realized we had to turn this thing upside down if we hoped to deliver the experience everybody wanted. It’s been such a major overhaul to get to the point where we are that we couldn’t let it go, even if that meant missing December.”
Series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker continued the self deprecation:
“We always wanted the game to feel like you’re actually in an episode of South Park. Getting the game up to the crappy standards of the show has been a real challenge and we’re excited to say it’s taken way longer than we thought it would.”
To soften the blow of the delay news, Ubisoft has let loose a gameplay video that we saw at gamescom 2013, so we can confirm that South Park fans will get a kick out of it – watch below (and dry those tears):
