Posting on the official EA news blog, EA Sports’ vice-president and general manager of the golf division, Daryl Holt, has released a debut screenshot for the company’s next PGA Tour game running on next-gen consoles, with a comparison between the current generation to showcase some vast visual improvements.
Also, EA Sports has ended its partnership with golfing superstar Tiger Woods.
Holt didn’t linger too long on the announcement, and after touching on a few features of the next-gen PGA Tour game he wrote:
“EA Sports and Tiger Woods have also made a mutual decision to end our partnership, which includes Tiger’s named PGA TOUR golf game. We’ve always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavours.
“Moving forward, we will continue to work with the PGA Tour exclusively to create groundbreaking golfing titles and our partnership remains strong.”
For Better or Worse
EA Sports’ partnership with Tiger Woods began with the pair’s first collaboration, Tiger Woods PGA Tour ’99, and spans sixteen titles released from 1998 until 2013. Following Tiger Woods’ very public marital problems, it was clear that EA Sports wished to distance itself from the scandal going so far as to allow other golf stars to share the cover of the annual titles as a means to place less emphasise on Woods.
It certainly is the end of an era as we’ve become accustomed to an annual Tiger Woods sports title, in the same way that we expect a Madden game year after year.
Don’t Look Under the Rug
The focus of Holt’s blog post, then, was what players can expect from the next generation of golf games, with “more choice and customization in how and where [players] play” mentioned. “We’re working on a new approach to deliver the best golf experience to our fans — we think you’ll love it,” Holt wrote, with more news promised “soon.”
For now, you can have a look at a comparison image showing screenshots of both the current- and next-gen versions of a work-in-progress PGA Tour game, with a full screenshot of the next-gen game following that:
