It’s a question I often ask myself when playing a story-based game with believable (and sometimes even slightly recognisable) characters that are placed in danger: Do other people feel any sympathy for artificially intelligent, virtual beings?
My most recent instance of this bizarre phenomenon was in Batman: Arkham Origins (read El33tonline’s review) and I saw a bunch of thugs beating up a single defenceless dude in the street. Despite being on a time-based mission I felt a compulsion to stop and save the guy from his predicament before continuing on to my current objective (I failed the mission because I spent too much time with this diversion).
Do you feel a similar level of sympathy for virtual characters? Which games have affected you the most and what lengths have you gone to in order to help AI driven personalities?
