At the age of 16, Chase Tanner has been diagnosed with leukaemia. Doctors have given him two years to live if he doesn’t undergo a bone marrow transplant operation.
Organiser of the upcoming Chasing Inspiration LAN, Darren Whitfield, tells us that the costs and time associated with the procedure are “unbelievable.” Simply testing suitable bone marrow donors costs R2000, and the chances of finding someone with matching DNA are slim, “about 1:1000+,” says Whitfield.
“This doesn’t include any admin or other procedure costs.”
Finding a donor is just the beginning, because if a match is found anywhere else in the world, patients will still need to pay for transportation and accommodation costs to bring the donor into the country. Luckily in Chase Tanner’s case, the Sunflower Foundation is providing sponsorship to go towards tests, but can’t fund the entire procedure.
In addition, and together with ‘Friends of Hockey’ and the ‘Im_Possible Foundation,’ “[a] small team of people have given up their personal time and money to help raise funds and awareness for Chase and the procedure,” setting up the Chase Tanner Trust Fund, but even all of this hard work and sacrifice is not enough.
