It has been confirmed today that 2K Marin (Bioshock 2, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified) has suffered layoffs, the extent of which has not yet been revealed but said to be rather severe.
In a statement to the press, a 2K Games representative confirmed the news, writing:
“We can confirm staff reductions at 2K Marin. While these were difficult decisions, we regularly evaluate our development efforts and have decided to reallocate creative resources. Our goal to create world-class video game titles remains unchanged.”
Sources have revealed to Polygon that these reductions mean 2K Marin, as we know it today, is closed, while another source said that a majority of the staff at the studio have been let go. In addition, staff from 2K Marin are said to be joining Rod Fergusson’s new 2K Games studio, which is also set up in the Bay Area of San Francisco.
2K Marin’s latest game, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified was a project years in the making, going through at least two development reboots and was eventually met with a lukewarm sales and critical reception on launch.
