It’s that time of year in South Africa again, and time to celebrate and reflect on Heritage Day in the country while enjoying a public holiday at the same time!
What’s Heritage Day all about? A public statement issued in 1996 reads as follows:
“The day is one of our newly created public holidays and its significance rests in recognising aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and difficult to pin down: creative expression, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat as well as the land in which we live.”
The statement went on to say that the day should promote “the notion that variety is a national asset as opposed to igniting conflict.”
It also just so happens to be National Braai Day in South Africa, which means there’ll be a bevy of delicious aromas drifting and dancing in the air today.
El33tonline will be taking the day off, too, but we’ve got a few morsels for you to read over while we’re away and also be sure to look over the latest headlines over here.
