Square Enix’s Japan-only PSP title Final Fantasy Type-0 was originally announced as a mobile phone game called Final Fantasy Agito XIII. Although this project never saw the light of day, this week’s issue of Famitsu reveals that Square Enix is developing a social free-to-play game for iOS and Android devices based on the characters and some of the concepts from Final Fantasy Type-0.
This new title – ‘Final Fantasy Agito’ – will arrive in Japan this winter and is being produced by Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy Type-0 director Hajime Tabata. In the game you play as a customisable student who undertakes missions spread across different story chapters. Square Enix intends to release a new story chapter every two weeks, with each two-week period demarcated into 10 days for Solo Play and 4 days for Team Play where players can work together to defeat bosses.
Since Final Fantasy Agito is free-to-play, undertaking missions will use up Energy which can be replenished via microtransaction items, and you’ll also need to pay for other conveniences such as continuing a failed mission.
Final Fantasy Agito will also feature a “decision” system where the story changes based on the results from player polls.
Square Enix hasn’t confirmed if the game will be localised for the West but the publisher has a good track record of translating its iOS titles into English.
