The Need for Speed: Rivals portion of EA’s gamescom press conference focused on personalisation and progression in the game.
Executive Producer at Ghost Games Marcus Nillson discussed AllDrive, Speed Points, Personalisation and then went on to reveal a new undercover cop in the trailer shared below:
Rivals is set in the gritty open road environment of Redview County, and pits law enforcement vehicles up against speed junkies. The game features the new AllDrive drop-in/drop-out online feature that allows players to connect into one online racing world, combining the single- and multiplayer components of the game.
Players will be able to choose to take on the role of the Cops or the Racers in a variety of game modes while ranking up and unlocking new in-game rewards, like new cars, customisation options, and abilities to help capture Racers or outwit the Cops, including turbo boosts, jammers and EMPs, shockwaves, roadblocks and helicopters.
Gamers will be able to compare stats and challenge friends thanks to the series’ online social Autolog system. As a racer you’ll earn Speed Points for evading cops and can unlock new cars and items with these, but will also lose everything if you’re busted. Meanwhile as a cop you’ll work together as part of a team to pursue racers and rise through the ranks with each bust, unlocking new cars and powerful pursuit tech as you climb.
Personalisation is making a return to Rivals and has been integrated into the gameplay. Racers will be able to customise their cars with colours and styles. The cops, however, will unlock different versions of cars, each with their own unique visual style reflecting the different performance changes in the vehicle.
“Patrol cars are standard issue and will be the easiest to unlock, giving general performance in all areas and will come with the standard RCPD livery. Enforcer vehicles will offer reinforced construction, allowing them to deal the most damage in car-to-car combat situations, and will have a more elite styled RCPD livery to reflect their bad-ass status.”
Need for Speed: Rivals will be released for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 19th in the US and November 22nd in the UK. The game will also be released for PS4 and Xbox One when those consoles launch this holiday season.
