Attendees at gamescom will have the opportunity to play Forza Motorsport 5. The two recently announced tracks of the returning Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and, brand new to the Forza series, Spa-Francorchamps will be available to players.
The new track of Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most requested tracks by fans and offers up 4.3 miles of Belgium countryside driving pleasure. To fans delight it features notable corners like La Source and Eau Rouge. The laser-scanned track has been carefully recreated in 1080p resolution and is ready to run at 60 fps.
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca makes a return in Forza Motorsport 5 and features the iconic corkscrew curve along this central Californian based track. The location of Laguna Seca is famous for the dramatic drop in elevation, making it an instant crowd pleaser for driving fans.
New physics engine and tire properties
Forza Motorsport 5 features a new physics engine and players at gamescom are amongst the first players to get test drive the new experience in gameplay. The developers at Turn 10 Studios partnered with Calspan (a leading tire testing organization) to re-evaluate tire properties from scratch. They did this in order to deliver the improvements in the driving experience that they wanted in Forza Motorsport 5. The driving experience players have with the cars has so much to do with the way that the cars interact with the road it was a key focus point to work on.
“Developing and improving the driving physics has, in many ways, become the central pursuit for the Forza Motorsport series,” said Forza Motorsport 5 creative director Dan Greenawalt. “We are always chasing that perfect simulation where we can accurately recreate the infinite variables of driving in the digital world. At the same time, that pursuit is always tempered by the limits of what we know about the science of vehicle dynamics and the properties of high performance materials. For Forza Motorsport 5, we have an incredibly powerful console at our disposal in the Xbox One.”
The power of the Xbox One
“To make the most of that power, we had to collect data on tire variables that have never been isolated – to refactor our understanding of tire technology through the lens of a much more powerful console; one that could handle the increasingly complex formulae of heat, slip and weight transfer that our increased understanding demands. Thanks to the power of the Xbox One and our Calspan partnership, we are implementing truly cutting edge scientific understanding of tire physics, suspension geometry, and aerodynamics – we’re not implementing the recommendations of last year’s text books, we’re running the tests that will write the vehicle dynamics text books of the next several years.”
The tire data that has been collected and built into the physics engine will bring a new level of depth and control to Forza Motorsport 5. Players should experience a greater sense of immersion and higher degree of challenge.
Forza Motorsport 5 is releasing November 2013 and is available in three different editions: standard, day one and limited edition.
