Giant Bomb’s Ryan Davis dies at age 34Written by: / / 3 Comments
We’ve just learned that Ryan Davis (ex-Gamespot writer and Giant Bomb co-founder) has passed away at the age of 34.
If you didn’t know of Ryan Davis, the gaming community at large might recognise him as the host of Giant Bomb’s weekly podcasts where he and the team discussed gaming, their thoughts on recent and upcoming events, and what they had all been playing. You know, a podcast.
With Davis at the helm, however, these recordings took on a life of their own reaching monstrous proportions – at two-and-a-half hours long on average, every minute was packed with excellent opinions, gaming minutia and topics that ranged from videogames to apocalypse scenarios to deadly spiders, and everything in-between. Most of all, the Giant Bombcast has been filled with some of the most hilarious audio entertainment you’re likely to find.
I came to know about Ryan Davis through the Bombcast and I’ve never missed an episode since its (very) humble beginnings in 2008. Over the years, an image of Davis has formed in my mind and I thought of him to be one of the most happy-go-lucky people I’ve ever heard speak and in some weird way, I also came to think of him as a friend who I had the fortune of listening to week after week.
On July 3rd, 2013, Ryan Davis passed away, mere days after his wedding day. Our sincerest thoughts go out to Davis’ wife, Anna, and our condolences go to his family and the Giant Bomb crew, which itself formed a part of Davis’ tight-knit family of friends. Giant Bomb’s thoughts on Ryan Davis and his untimely death can be found here.
An absolute tragedy. Ryan Davis, you will be sorely missed.
Just to show how much of an influence Ryan Davis has had on the world of gaming, at the time of writing this article he was a worldwide trending topic on Twitter. He would have got a kick out of that.
