As EA and DICE get ready to reveal Battlefield 4 on March 26th at an invite-only event during Game Developers Conference 2013 next week, with a public showing of the game on the following day, March 27th, rumours are swirling around the potential showing of the next Call of Duty game.
It’s widely expected that the next Call of Duty title from Activision is currently in development at Infinity Ward and will bear the moniker of Modern Warfare 4, supposedly leaked information and details point to another game, Call of Duty: Ghosts, a game said to only be releasing on next generation consoles and PC, with a reveal coming in early May.
The Source is Reliable… as Always
This information was related by way of a video created by known YouTube Call of Duty tips creator, Drift0r, who received the details from a ‘very reliable’ source. Someone he can ‘trust with his life.’ Can he trust this source with his reputation?
According to the leaked information, Call of Duty: Ghosts is set in the future but due to the game’s story and timeline, we’ll be using current weaponry. Perhaps a post-apocalyptic event put technology development on pause?
Interestingly, the leak points to dynamic loading screens for multiplayer, where instead of simply waiting for a timer to countdown until the beginning of a match, players will be able to go through different actions to get themselves into the level, like sneaking in, rappelling into an area and other methods. This in itself would be a welcome evolution for online games.
In addition, the Call of Duty tipster mentioned gameplay improvements like dashing and sliding while shooting, as well as the ability to roll left and right while in a prone (lying down) position, while peeking around corners (on console) will be back.
Lastly, the unnamed source said that the much-liked Spec Ops co-operative missions from previous Modern Warfare games will be replaced with another game mode (most likely not zombies), while both singleplayer and multiplayer portions of the game will feature destructible environments that greatly affect the action (with things like collapsing buildings on the cards).
You can hear Drift0r speak about all of these rumours in his video below:
Call of Duty: Ghosts – MW4 Leaked Info and Title
While the gameplay additions and improvements sound interesting, there are some pieces of information that don’t fit, like the exclusivity on next generation consoles. While this would allow the developer working on the game to focus on a new graphics engine and not be limited to current generation technology, I very much doubt Activision would limit its biggest annual release to a set of platforms that would, at the time of release, be available in very limited quantities (under ten million units).
If Call of Duty: Ghosts is a real game, what are the odds that another multi-platform game (let’s call it Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4) is also in development, with Ghosts as a spin-off title?
The timing for an announcement of the next Call of Duty game makes sense, but early May seems a bit far out, especially considering Battlefield 4’s reveal coming soon. Activision would want to spoil EA’s party with a reveal of its own, and soon.
What do you think of the speculation?
Thanks to Gian-Paolo Buffo for pointing us to the thought-provoking video, even if it is a whole lot of H33rsay
